United Milk

United Milk, at Westbury in Wiltshire, has established the largest milk processing plant in Europe. Its output is manufactured into a wide range of dairy products, which are marketed both in the UK and internationally. As a brand new site, many of its operating processes are leading edge. As a consequence the staffing model has required the recruitment of self-managing teams capable of planning their own workloads and taking key decisions for themselves.

Academy has worked with the business from the outset. The initial challenge being to recruit the 100 + staff that were needed to establish the operation. Academy worked very closely with United Milk personnel to design a process that would meet their needs. A series of open events were planned and subsequently managed by Academy, which were attended by over 2000 candidates. Each candidate was initially given brief aptitude tests that assessed their suitability for the roles. Successful candidates were then interviewed. This process ensured that the business had the staff in place to commence its operations. Academy have subsequently developed and managed other end- to- end recruitment processes for United Milk .

“We needed to recruit large numbers of staff in a very short time frame who had both the initiative and self managing skills to help establish our business. We were looking for distinct behaviours and with Academy’s assistance we were able to develop a method and a process that enabled us to find these. The quality of the selection process is demonstrated in the fact that in the first six months only 3 out of 110 employees left the business, none for reasons of role unsuitability.”
